| Laptop batteries are of three types - Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (LiON). They differ in price, weight and specific characteristics. Lithium Ion (LiON) laptop batteries are normally exploited in technically advanced makes of laptops. These batteries are powerful enough to run laptops and accessories, such as MP3 players, DVD players and USB devices. They are lighter than NiCd and NiMH batteries and have not got any memory defect. If used properly, LiON batteries are expected to function for approximately 3 years, but it is essential to note that the three-year period begins once batteries are manufactured and not when they are actually used. A pc battery needs to be changed when the laptop cannot function any longer unless connected to the main supply of electricity via an adaptor. Below are a few guidelines to prolong laptop battery's longevity. • Frequent full discharges of a pc battery make its longevity shorter. Partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion batteries than a complete discharge. Recharging partially charged lithium-ion batteries does not cause harm, as they have no memory. Reduced pc battery's life in a laptop is usually resulted from heat rather than charge - discharge patterns. • It is advisable to fully discharge a laptop battery after 30 charges. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will become significantly less accurate and can cause a premature cut-off of the pc. • Deploy cooling devices (readily available on the market) for the pc temperature to meet the requirements specified by the manufacturer. • Remove a battery from a laptop when it is run on a fixed power. (Some laptop makers are concerned about dust and moisture that pile up inside the laptop battery casing.) • Avoid buying spare LiON batteries for later deployment. Pay attention to the date of expiration. Never buy old stock, even if it is sold at lower costs. • If you have a spare LiON battery, deploy one to the full and keep the other one cool by placing it into the fridge. Do not freeze the battery. For longer storage, keep the pc battery at a 40% charge level. Before deploying any laptop, remember to read a manual instruction supplied. |
