| Everyone, including children, can experience hair loss, known as alopecia. Baldness refers to excessive loss of hair from your scalp. Heredity, a disease or even medicine can trigger baldness. The most frequently observed type of undue hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. It is the cause of about 95% of the cases of baldness in the USA. Males suffer from androgenetic alopecia far more frequently than females. Two factors determine this medical condition: a genetic predisposition to undue hair loss and the male hormone testosterone (yes, females have a low level of testosterone in their bodies). Commonly, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT stimulates the growth of body and beard hair, but also diminishes hair follicles on the scalp, causing thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, alongside higher levels of testosterone and DHT, can badly impact scalp hair growth. Baldness occurs when the number of hair shedding exceeds the number of re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is shed. Androgenetic alopecia is considered a cosmetic issue. One of the most efficient methods of treatment sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is Finasteride (Propecia). Taken daily in a pill form, Propecia inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby preventing the shrinkage of hair follicles. The drug therapy must not be taken by females, because it can cause birth defects. Generic Propecia, which is as efficacious as the branded drug, is much cheaper and, consequently, can be purchased by a larger number of men experiencing hair loss. As a result of a 24-month study 83% of men aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. The majority of men reported an increase in the amount of hair, a decrease in hair loss, and improvement in appearance. Like all prescription drugs, Generic Propecia may lead to adverse side effects. In clinical studies, adverse side effects from Generic Propecia were rare and did not affect most men. A very small number of men reported some sexual adverse side effects, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in attaining an erection and a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects was observed in less than 2% of men. These side effects were temporary and went away in males who stopped taking Generic Propecia. These side effects also disappeared in most men (58%) who went on taking Generic Propecia.
