| A famous motto of the Saab company “Born from jets” mirrors somehow the history of the first Saab automobile making. It was manufactured by sixteen airplane design engineers and therefore was founded on the design of an airplane. The meaning of a motto is that the high quality and reliability of Saab automobiles may be equaled with the quality and safety of aircrafts. Today Saab cars production is a prerogative of General Motors corporation (GM), but Saab airplane sub-unit is still controlled by the Swedes. So let us take a digression into the history of Saab corporation. The make Saab appeared in 1937 with the production of aeroplanes for the Swedish Air Force. From that moment on it has concentrated on construction of military airplanes, including fighter airplanes for NATO. Thanks to their high reliability Saab aeroplanes were recognized throughout the world. Since 1949 Saab specialists have been involved in the construction of well-engineered cars. The peculiar feature of Saab automobiles consists in the aerodynamic design that helps in fuel economy. This distinguishing feature is observed in all Saab models. Safety is one of fundamental priorities of Saab vehicles. The specialists of this corporation use all the latest technological achievements to make their cars safe and modern. Among such innovations there are: self-repairing bumpers, self-cleaning headlights, turbo charged engines, air filters and etc. In 1980s due to the global economy growth and the spread of multinational corporations the Saab corporation faced difficulties in keeping its positions on the marketplace. This led to the separation of the Saab automobile sub-unit and its selling to several investors. The main investor has become GM corporation that owns 50% of the shares. The range of Saab models has recently been supplemented with the first SUV. All the other models are regularly updated in accordance with the market requirements. But still, there are argues about increasing impact of General Motors. Discussions are led on account of the ability of Saab to maintain its uniqueness and to compete with such famous European brands as BMW, Volvo and Mercedes. In spite of all these facts the amateurs of Saab automobiles hope that its airplane heritage will help them to create unique and reliable automobiles. |
