| In a recent survey, breakouts topped the list of beauty calamities, distressing respondents more than lines and wrinkles, or even a haircut gone badly. Acne, although usually affecting teens, can occur at any age. Not only is the face affected, but at times also the neck and the back. What can be done to cure it? Firstly, try over-the-counter products that contain salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is the most frequently used acne solution and is regarded as one of the most potent ones in the market. If you are suffering from mild non-inflammatory cases of acne, benzoyl peroxide is regarded as very efficient. Nevertheless, there are a few minor side effects. It can trigger dry skin. If your skin is too dry, stop applying the treatment for a while and then, using a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide, try again. Salicylic acid works best on non-inflammatory forms of acne and it starts by exfoliating the dead skin, thereby keeping the pores of the skin clean and forestalling plugging. When nothing blocks the pores, your chances of getting whiteheads and blackheads reduce drastically. But skin irritation is possible. Users have complained of dryness, stinging or burning sensation, and flaking and peeling of the skin. If there is no improvement in treating acne after a few weeks, talk to your doctor about prescription acne solutions, such as antibiotics, retinoids and adapalene (Differin). Antibiotics prevent bacteria from multiplying and spreading in the body. Even though they show results quicker, antibiotics are usually not favored by patients, because they bring on side effects, such as dyspepsia, discoloration of the skin, lightheadedness and sensitivity to light. For severe cases of cystic acne, your family physician may prescribe isotretinoin (Accutane) or may send you to a dermatologist. Because grave side effects are possible, males and females administering Accutane should be carefully observed by their doctors. If other acne solutions appear ineffective, laser or light therapy may be used. |
