| Infertility (also known as sterility) is the inability to conceive a child after, at least, one year of trying. Infertility is not necessarily a woman's problem. In 30% of cases infertility is because of female factors. In another 30% of cases, sterility is due to the male. The remaining 40% of cases are caused by a combination of male and female factors or by unknown factors. In most cases ovulation problems cause infertility in women. Without ovulation, there are no eggs to be fertilized. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods. Less common causes of reproduction problems in females are plugged uterine tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or operation for an ectopic pregnancy, physical problems with the womb, uterine fibroids. The female inability to conceive a child can be affected by a great many factors. They are age, strain, unhealthy diet, athletic training, being overweight or underweight, heavy smoking, alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), diseases that result in hormonal changes. The commonest cause of male sterility is a varicocele - an abnormal enlargement of the vein in the scrotum that drains the testicles. This may badly affect sperm production. A blockage in a man's reproductive system may trigger male infertility. Some drugs may also cause infertility. Other causes of male sterility may include low sperm count, undescended testicles, diseases. Smokers have a 13-17% lower sperm count that those non-smokers. High alcohol intake can considerably reduce the sperm count. Tight-fitting clothes and elongated periods of sitting can result in a decrease in sperm count through undue heating of the testes. Marijuana, cocaine and anabolic steroids all lower the sperm count and badly influence motility. At times the cause of male sterility cannot be identified. In these cases, there may be an underlying genetic problem. Both males and women need some form of assisted conception if pregnancy does not occur naturally. |
