| The word "antibiotic" comes from the Greek anti which means "against" and bios denoting "life" (a bacterium is a life form). Antibiotics are powerful drugs that fight bacterial infections. If taken as recommended, antibiotics can save lives. They either kill off microorganisms outright or keep them from multiplication. Your body's natural defenses can normally take it from there. The vast majority of antibiotics have 2 names, the trade name created by the manufacturer, and a generic name dependent on chemical properties of antibiotics. Antibiotics do not fight off viral infections, for example colds, flu, most coughs and bronchitis, sore throats unless caused by strep. A broad-spectrum antibiotic can be used to combat a great number of infections. A narrow-spectrum antibiotic is only efficacious against a few types of germs. There are antibiotics that can kill off aerobic bacteria, whereas others work against anaerobic microbes. Aerobic bacteria require oxygen, whereas anaerobic bacteria do not. Antibiotics may be precondition beforehand, to forestall an infection, especially before surgery. This is called 'preventive' use of antibiotics. They are usually taken prior to bowel and orthopedic surgery. Antibiotics can cause many more medical problems, when not taken in the right way. Extensive use and misuse in sick people over time have jeopardized antibiotics' ability to kill bacteria. At present, almost all bacteria are antibitocs-resistant, so that more recently developed antibiotics are sometimes necessary to stop infections once easily cured. Antibiotics can also lead to complications, such as vaginal yeast infections and diarrhea. If you are taking an antibiotic, observe the instructions. Your dosage has been calculated to kill off microbes throughout the course of the disease. So, if you do not destination, you risk leaving enough germs in your body to restart the infection - even after you are feeling good. The leftover medicine will be insufficient to kill the microbes the next time, and it may even make them resistant. |
