| Sexual functioning can be adversely affected by many factors. Erection problems or erectile dysfunction is caused by both psychological and physical factors. It is thought that in the vast majority of cases there is a physical factor involved. Psychological factors that contribute to or lead to erection problems include stress and anxiety, conflicts and dissatisfaction with a sexual partner, depression. Males with ED often have the fear of poor performance in bed. Men who have suffered from erection problems in the past are anxious about their performance. This distracts from getting sexually aroused, thus bringing on erection problems. Among physical factors bringing on erectile dysfunction include diabetes, low blood flow to the genitalia, penile nerve damage, endocrine imbalances, substance abuse including chain smoking, high cholesterol level and blood vessel problems. However, whatever the causes are, it is typical of men who have impotence to have feelings of anxiety, guilt and low self-esteem. There are only three oral drugs sanctioned by the FDA to treat ED: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The medicines relax the walls of the penis allowing more blood to flow to the organ, so that when a male is sexually aroused, he can get an erection. The medicines are efficient and work in a similar way. There are subtle differences in how long and how quickly the drug takes effect. Levitra works a little longer than Viagra. They both take effect in about 30 minutes. With Levitra, the effects last for about 5 hours, while the effects of Viagra for 4 hours. Cialis works a bit faster (within about 15 minutes), and the effects last much longer - up to 36 hours in some cases. Although each medicine has proven powerful, none is cure-all. Moreover they can result in problems if taken with other medicines. Note that drug-to-drug interactions with nitrates or nitroglycerin heart drugs can bring on a dangerous drop in blood pressure, which can be life-threatening. More general side effects, such as splitting headaches and - in case of Viagra - visual changes can be observed. Apart from drug therapies, there are other methods of treatments, such as mechanical therapies and surgery for severe cases of ED. The kind of treatment, therefore, depends on the severity of the disorder. |
