| A mixture of punk and hard-core tendencies are the basis of the EMO subculture. The term "emocore" comes from emotional hard-core and dates back to the middle of the Eighties. Founders of the music style began to add melodic features to their songs. Sadness, love, sense of guilt are usual topics of their songs. Hence, the emo style could be defined as rock music with emotional lyric features. Yet, the definition of the emo style is still hotly debated. Although the emo subculture was originally considered a music genre, nowadays it is referred not only to music, but also to conduct, fashion, style and the way of life. The emo style is characterised as unfashionable. This way its representatives display that they take no interest in social processes. Emos consider themselves outcasts and, so, show their neglect of existing social rules and standards through the emo subculture. They prefer skinny jeans, ordinarily in bright colours, and tight-fitting T-shirts, with names of emo bands printed on them. Studded belts and black wristbands are usual accessories in the emo fashion. Piercing is also popular with emo representatives. Black Converse sneakers are ordinarily worn by emo representatives. Some boys also wear thick black horn-rimmed glasses. The emo fashion is also famous for its hairstyles. Popular looks are long side-swept bangs, commonly covering one or both eyes. Straightened and dyed black hair is also a part of the emo trend. Hair is commonly highlighted blue, pink, red, or blond. Short choppy layers of hair are also common. At times this fashion has been characterised as a fad. At the outset of the third millennium, the emo fashion was associated with a clean look, but as the style spread to teens, it became darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black supplanting sweater vests. Emo adherents are highly vulnerable characters. Psychologists consider them introverts who do not want to communicate with the world around. Instead, they express their standpoints by means of poetry. Poems they write are full of sorrow, nostalgia and despair. Normally these emotions are observed in teens aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally sensitive. For many emo representatives emoism becomes a way of life. |
