| A combination of punk and hard-core music styles are the basis of the emo subculture. The term "emocore" comes from emotional hardcore and is thought to have appeared the mid of the 80s. Founders of this music style added melodic features to their songs. Sorrow, affection, sense of loneliness are common topics of their songs. Thus, the emo style could be defined as rock music with emotional lyric features. Yet, the definition of the emo style is still hotly debated. Even though the emo subculture was originally regarded as a music genre, nowadays it is referred not only to music, but also to conduct, fashion, style and the way of life. The emo style is considered unfashionable. This way emo adherents demonstrate that they are not interested in all aspects of society. Emos consider themselves outcasts and, so, display their disregard for existing social rules and standards through the emo style. Tight jeans and t-shirts, with printed names of popular emocore bands, Converse sneakers, colorful stockings, a full scope of body accessories, badges, bracelets create the image of an EMOtional teenager. Hairstyles also contribute to the emo fashion. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Straightened and colored black hair is also a part of the emo trend. Hair is commonly highlighted blue, pink, red, or blond. In the early 2000s, the emo fashion was associated with an immaculate look, but when the style spread to youngsters, it got darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the color black. Emos are extremely sensitive people. Specialists regard them as introverts who do not want to communicate with the world around. Instead, they demonstrate their viewpoints by means of poetry. Poems they compose are full of sorrow, nostalgia and despair. Commonly these emotions are typical of young people aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally and psychologically unstable. Coupled by family problems, the emoism becomes a way of life for many emo representatives. |
