| The term "Psychiatry" was introduced by Doctor J.C. Reil from Germany in 1808. PSYCHIATRY is a science that studies and treats mental disorders. Psychiatrists can treat a great many mental illnesses. Mental health professionals work around the world. Psychiatrists help patients to deal with depression, treat sleep disorders etc. There are many mental disorders and phobias that need specialist medical treatment. Insomnia, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, abnormally high pressure moods, diverse personality disorders etc are some of the commonest mental disorders. ANOREXIA is a very common psychological disorder, especially in young girls. It begins when a person, commonly a young girl starves deliberately or eats less to become slimmer. However, starving leads to a compete loss of appetite and serious health problems, for example infertility in females. SCHIZOPHRENIA is another serious mental disorder. It has been a challenge to Psychiatry for ages. It is an abnormal perception of reality badly affecting all five human senses. Hallucinations, abnormal speech, unarranged thinking pattern, paranoia are typical of schizophrenic patients. Schizophrenics commonly suffer from major depressions and anxiety disorders. People with schizophrenia have a shorter lifespan than mentally healthy people. One of the reasons is a high suicidal rate among mentally ill people suffering from the disorder. Though it is not hereditary, Schizophrenia is recorded to affect family members. Alcohol addiction is a common problem to be treated by psychiatrists. Social problems, for instance unemployment, poverty and homelessness, are common as well. Psychiatry handles mental disorders that are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. The way people think, percept the reality, their beliefs and many other things mould their psyche which may be earnestly challenged because of circumstances. A psychiatrist is to renew the hampered balance through a specialist aid and medicines. It requires a lot of effort and time to recover. Some cases, however, are untreatable. |
