| Every now and then everyone feels down. According to the report, ten percent of American grownups suffer from a depressive disorder. This type of mental disorders includes major depression. The main symptoms of major depression are the following: - Feeling emotionally numb - Feeling upset or empty - Feeling slowed down or feeling unsatisfied and unable to sit still - Weight gain or loss - Thoughts about suicide or death - Trouble making everyday decisions - Problems sleeping, particularly in the early morning or waiting to sleep all the time - Feeling worn out all the time Some people suffering from depression may also have bad headaches, other aches and pains, digestive problems or problems with sex. Older people who are depressed may also feel confused or have trouble understanding simple requests. Depression seems to be related to a chemical imbalance in the brain that makes it hard for cells to communicate with one another. Depression can be triggered by stressful events, such as the death of someone you love, a breakup or downsizing. But it can also develop out of the blue. Certain medicines, drugs and alcohol, or chronic diseases, such as diabetes or coronary problems, can bring on depression. Depression can be treated with medications, or special form of counseling known as psychotherapy, or with both. Antidepressants are medications used to help people having depression. Antidepressants work by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Antidepressants help people with depression by making these natural chemicals more available to the brain. Ordinarily, antidepressants are taken at least for 6-12 months. In some cases, patients and their doctors may decide that antidepressants are needed for a longer period of time. They can improve your mood, sleep, concentration and appetite. It may take several weeks to see the results. Antidepressants are divided into a few types. You and your physician may have to try a few before finding what medication is the most efficient for you. Medicines sometimes lead to adverse side effects. They may vary from person to person and from medication to medication. For example, when you first start your antidepressant you may feel tired, have trouble sleeping or feel sick to your stomach. These side effects typcally go away after a short time. Even after a year of treatment, there is still about a 10% probability of depression returning when treatment is finished. Some people take an antidepressant for several years. |
