| The recurrent inability to get or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse is called erectile dysfunction (also known as male impotence). Some males experience chronic ED, and others have partial or brief erections. Frequent ED can cause emotional and relationship problems, and often results in diminished self-esteem. It makes defining ED and estimating its incidence hard. Depending on the definition used, from 15 to 30 mln are reported to have ED. The vast majority of male sexualproblems are caused by physical factors, such as vascular, nerve and abnormalities in the genital area. In older men, erectile dysfunction commonly has a physical cause, for instance diseases, injuries, or side effects of medications. Any disorder that impairs penile nerves and blood vessels has the potential to cause ED. Incidence increases with age: about 5% of 40-year-olds and 15-25% of 65-year-olds experience ED. Still, it is not an inevitable feature of aging. Not being able to perform in bed adversely impacts on man's self-esteem and confidence. Moreover, it also severely damages his relationship with a sexual partner. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), for every 1, 000 men in the USA, 7.7 physician office visits were made for erectile dysfunction in 1985. By 1999, that number had nearly tripled. The increase happened gradually, probably because treatments, for example vacuum devices and injectable medications became more freely available. In fact, erectile dysfunction is treatable regardless of age, and awareness of this fact has been increasing. Now more men search for help and return to normal sex life due to advanced, efficacious therapies for erectile dysfunction. There are drug, mechanical, injection and surgery therapies. One way to better ED is to make some alterations in life-style. For some males, adopting a healthier lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, doing regular exercise, and relieving strain, may be all that is required to find relief. For those who require more intensive therapy, lifestyle changes alongside other treatments can further help. |
