| Music is an art which acts as an accurate mirror of social and cultural changes. If the society or the culture in a certain area is declining, it will be reflected in the music of that place. Likewise, when the society or the culture is developing well, the music will also flourish. Therefore, music has a major use in the tracking down the history of a country. Modern music owes much to the Ancient Greeks. In fact, the term "music" is derived from the 9 Ancient Greek muses - goddesses controlling the arts and sciences. Present-day musicians refer to their muse, which is someone who impacts on another person's creative work. Different musical terms, such as melody, tune, rhythm and others have their roots in the Greek language. Still, when Ancient Greece fell into decline, Greek music stopped its development for a few centuries until it was revived in the Nineteenth century. It is said that Greeks considered music a way of worshipping God. Music was also a part of their social life. It was played on all forms of social occasions. Because drama was also quite popular in Greece, they also used music when drama was staged. Greek music is normally said to have lacked harmony. It was largely performed by one singer and not by a chorus as is ordinarily seen in Greek plays. Ancient musicians stringently stuck to the laws of music and didn't mix one form with another. The rules were so rigid that the viewers or listeners could not even clap. The objective of musical shows was not to entertain but to teach common people. Pythagoras suggested the use of numbers to mark musical scales which he identified while studying the differences in sound frequencies of varied length strings of a musical instrument. This concept spread to Ancient Greek Music, and Pythagoras became known as the father of music theory. Most musical works, as stated, was monophonic. Therefore, they were quire similar. But when musicians began introducing new things to music, Plato showed disapproval. Contemporary Greek music is a combination of Greek traditional folk music and both Eastern and Western influences. |
