| Hardly anyone is unaware of the term 'mass media'. Everyday we consult mass media sources to learn the latest home and foreign news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather. The importance of mass media these days is immense. Mass media play a big role in forming and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. The media strongly impact society, because it can reach a wide audience with a strong and influential message. They include four main sources: television, press, radio and the Web. Each has its own characteristics and functions. Daily millions of newspapers and glossy magazines are published worldwide. The list of them seems endless. There are various national and local newspapers, dailies and weeklies, quality papers that cater to the better educated readers and popular papers that sell to a much larger readership. Some papers give prominance to politics, financial and economic issues; whereas others focus on 'human interest stories'. The advent of radio made it possible for a much larger audience of people to get access to the latest information. Radio is preferable when you are at work and require information or have to focus your attention on something else. Hence, we commonly turn on the radio when driving a car to listen to the newsflash and live reports. Listeners are especially keen on call-in chat-shows and music charts. It has been estimated that the vast majority of people consider TV their primary source of information. TV sets have become a part of home decor. Our everyday life is often organized according to the program schedule. We switch it on to watch our favorite sitcoms and chat-shows, to view newly released films, music videos and news programs. While TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Web allows us to have access to information and amusement day and night. Being both the video and audio source of information, the Internet contains vast databanks of information in all languages. It is known for the selection of viewpoints presented, large collections of music and movies, electronic encyclopedias intended to facilitate the search on the Web, e-books and websites of magazines and papers. Life without mass media would be boring and limited. Nonetheless, 'addiction' to some sources of amusement, such as watching TV and surfing the Internet for hours, can badly impact upon well-being and interpersonal communication. |
