| Every Ukrainian town of, at least, 20, 000 or more residents has, at least, one hotel. In small towns, this one hotel is usually from the Soviet time and can be inexpensive - $10 USD and up for a double room. Bigger towns (50-200 thousand residents) normally have a number of hotels - both private and state-run. Service standards in Ukrainian hotels As a rule, there is commonly no English-speaking staff in state-run hotels in small towns, and they offer customers Soviet standards of service. If you are a risk-taking young backpacker on a tight budget, you do not probably care that there is no phone, the beds are a bit short, the closet door is broken, there's no hot water, and the temperature hovers around 16°C. However, other categories of foreign visitors are normally displeased with their experience in such hotels. Privately owned hotels are often — but not always — both more costly and have higher service standards. Some privately owned hotels Ukrainian towns and cities are splendid, but English-speaking staff is unlikely to work there. In the Carpathian region, there are many fantastic family-run privately owned inns with hospitable hosts and excellent living conditions. Outside the Carpathians, nonetheless, family-run hotels and guesthouses are almost nonexistent. Modern hotels with a western type of service and comfort can be found in all large Ukrainian cities and in resorts of Crimea and the Carpathians. These hotels often have higher rates than the same ones overseas. This is because Ukraine lacks three, four, and five-star hotels, and hence tourists are willing to pay more for good living conditions. Making hotel reservations in Ukraine In towns and cities, you can book a room right on arrival to the hotel, provided you have a passport. However, in large cities like Kiev and Odessa you should make reservations beforehand. Also, remember that there are no tourist information agencies where staff will call around to hotels to help you book a room, except for an agency situated at Lviv airport. Advanced reservation procedures may differ, depending on a hotel. You can book a room over the telephone by providing your name and the time you expect to arrive. If you are late, they may give your room to someone else. Rooms in up-to-date hotels usually need to be booked via a travel agency or online - either the hotel's site or the website of a travel agency.
