| Whether you take care of a dog or a cat, there are chances that they would be infested with fleas and ticks, especially during the flea season: Summer. Getting rid of fleas can be done with the following steps. Observe Your Pet Watch your pet and observe him for popular symptoms of a tick and flea infestation such as excessive biting and scratching, particularly around the tail, hind and lower back parts. Fleas and ticks can also hide in the area covered by the cat or dog collar so there may be flea bites in that area. Find raw parts of skin where your poor pet may have been scratching at ticks or fleas for quite some time. Another bit of evidence is "flea debris," specks of dried blood that are black in color. Cat or Dog Flea and Tick Collars If you learned about the flea and tick infestation right away, it may be possible to remove the ticks by using flea and tick powders or collars. There are many types and an assortment of brands to select from, and some come with a special comb with fine teeth which is created to get rid of ticks from fur. Some of these flea and tick powders and collars can be used by both cats and dogs, but there are some that would only be okay for dogs. make sure you check the product labels before using them on your pets. Flea and Tick Baths It's advantageous to bathe your pets regularly using a specially formulated shampoo or treatment. It's important to think about the type of fur or coat your pet has when bathing. This is specially true for dogs as several breeds have essential oils in their fur that should not be cleaned away with soap and water more than a couple of times a year. If bathing in a tub with flea and tick treatment is not a choice for your pet, refer to your vet for other choices. Scheduled Flea and Tick Medication Another method is to have your pets take flea and tick treatment pills monthly. There are pills available for your pet to take on a monthly basis that will prevent ticks from reproducing, however they do not get rid of those that have already reached maturity. There are also multi-purpose flea and tick medications and products available that are made to prevent ticks from reproducing as well as managing heartworm, whipworms, hookworms and roundworms. Fleas and ticks will always exist, but with careful planning and proper treatment, getting rid of fleas will not become a problem for you or your pet dog or cat. |
