| When you are considering a child’s bicycle, we often immediately think of tricycles or bikes with stabilisers that were supposed to entertain your child for hours. Except they don’t... but now there is a new type of bicycle for children called balance bikes. Balance bikes are bicycles without any stabilisers, pedals or chains. The great thing about these balance bikes is that they really are as simple as they look. Your child doesn't have to worry about any pedals or focusing on using the pedals and moving forward. We've all been there when we were little. Your head was constantly watching your feet moving and not looking at where they are going. In addition without all the extras the bikes are super lightweight and therefore suitable for children as soon as they can walk confidently. Due to the fact there is a wheel out front, one behind and nothing complicated in between, the child learns to ride a bike much quicker and a lot safer. They are able to push themselves forward by using their feet and at the same time maintaining their balance. Not only do children absolutely love using balance bikes but parents can't help but see a vast improvement in their child's development ...confidence, independence, Parents are often amazed at the results when their child has been using a balance bike for several months. The child's balance is dramatically improved and because they don't rely on stabilisers, your child quickly learns to depend on their own balance. Their motor skills and coordination also greatly improves, not to mention their confidence. Children who use balance bikes move onto bigger bikes (with pedals and no stabilisers much quicker). I have a two and a half year old that can use a normal pedal bike easily and after having a balance bike for 5 months first he jumped onto a normal bike and was pedalling away within an hour. The hard part, balance, already leant, pedalling is easy. Buying a Balance Bike When buying a balance bike online make sure that the balance bike has the following: Adjustable handlebars and seats, so that the bike always fits your individual child, and not dimensions laid down by manufacturers. An integrated footrest to make the experience as comfortable as possible, after all you wouldn’t go off a curb with your feet in midair as that would hurt! That the frame is a durable steel instead of a wooden frame as wooden bikes tend to break and can be heavy. Puncture Proof tyres as after all punctures are time consuming and expensive to fix. That the bike looks like a bike! A wooden character branded bike is cool to a 2 year old...will they feel the same at 4? These bikes are relatively new to the UK, but are huge in the USA, Japan and Australia. You will not be disappointed when you see the joy on your child’s face, and the best bit is the smile will remain! |
